SUMMARY:Dr. Nora Slonimsky\, Remember the #Ladies: Women Printers and the Social Media of the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Alexander Hamilton awareness Society in collaboration with the Hamilton Grange National Memorial\, the Institute for the Thomas Paine Studies\, and the Fort Plain Museum. Virtual event\, free registration here. \nFrom Common Sense to the Declaration of Independence\, there are many iconic publications associated with the American Revolution. The importance of printing and of communication before\, during\, and after the war for independence is well established\, with the social networks of the eighteenth century playing just as big a role in society as their digital counterparts do today. Women printers were pivotal to this work of the revolutionary movement\, and yet they are often given only a small role in the history of media in the late eighteen century. This talk will remember\, in the words of Abigail Adams\, some of these ladies\, women like Elizabeth Hunter Holt and Mary Katherine Goddard\, and consider what impact their work had on Alexander and Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. \nDr. Nora Slonimsky is the Gardiner Assistant Professor of History at Iona College\, where she also serves as Director of the Institute for Thomas Paine Studies (ITPS). Nora’s research focuses on the intersection of intellectual property\, commerce\, and politics in colonial\, revolutionary\, and early national America.

SUMMARY:Age of Revolution in the Digital Age Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled for September 11-12\, 2020 \nConference page here \nWorkshop was invite only. Applications are now closed. Original CFP Below. \nInformation landscapes are changing profoundly. In order to absorb\, circulate\, and share knowledge\, we all must balance “old” and “new” media. This is as true for academics as it is for anyone else\, and how scholars negotiate these paradigms shapes our research\, our teaching\, and our attempts to reach broader publics. And yet\, while the technologies and mediums that dominate contemporary communications are indeed new\, the opportunities and challenges they pose are not. The late eighteenth century age of revolutions included similarly dramatic upheavals in media and power. Understanding this history offers considerable insight our present moment\, and harnessing the potential of digital tools enables new insights into this crucial historical period. \nThe Institute of Thomas Paine Studies at Iona College invites scholars of history and digital media to join us in exploring how digital tools offer new insights into the Age of Revolutions and how the history of this era can help us better understand our own digital age. Participants working at the nexus of these two fields are encouraged to apply for a workshop-symposium that will take place at Iona College September 11-12\, 2020. Participants will also be invited to submit edited and expanded papers for future symposia and considered for inclusion in a volume to be published by Cornell University Press. \nApplicants are encouraged to send an abstract of no more than 300 words and a one page C.V. as a single document to itps@iona.edu. \nThe organizers invite submissions from all scholars of early America and/or digital media and particularly welcome proposals from members of under-represented communities. Financial assistance for travel and accommodations may be available for select participants.

SUMMARY:ITPS Patriots' Day Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Symposium Page \nAs part of the Iona Month of Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities\, “From Concord to Common Sense: Commemoration and Conflict in the Legacy of the American Revolution” will explore the complex relationship between celebration and critique of the American war for independence. \nInspired by the creation of Patriots’ Day in the late nineteenth century\, this symposium will discuss how we remember the Revolutionary Era. A holiday celebrated in three states – and recognized locally in many others – Patriots’ Day commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord on the third Monday of April every year\, recognizing them start of the American Revolution. Three roundtable discussions and an ITPS archival exhibit will address questions of what commemoration means\, the social role and responsibility of commemorative practices\, and how evolving methodologies in the digital humanities and in public history influence our historical memory of events and figures—from Thomas Paine to the 21st century. \nThis event is free and open to the public. No RSVP required!
